Ajanta Buddhist Caves
Bodhisattvas Padmapani

India, Northern Maharashtra, Aurangabad

This particular painting was discovered inside cave number one at Ajanta. These man made caves date back to 200 BC through 650 AD. All 29 caves are cut into a deep rock gorge that curves along a steep circular ravine. The caves were abandoned with the decline of Buddhism and not discovered again until 1819 when a British hunting party fell upon them. Unesco has listed the Ajanta Caves as a world heritage site.
